Sola Rola - Java - Video & Review

Sola Rola is, quite simply, the best Java game I have ever played. It's got lovely graphics and lovely gameplay, a low price, and a sense of humour, so you couldn't really ask for more. It's a cute wobbly 2D puzzle/platformer with a strange world full of changing environments, timebombs, lava flows, ropes, rocks, nasty monsters, disappearing clouds, cars, lifts and weird aliens. It starts out with extremely simple levels, but they get very tricky as the game progresses, with an excellent learning curve that should suit all kinds of gamers.

I've done a couple of gameplay videos above, and a review for All About Symbian which you can find at the link below:

The graphics aren't 3D, in fact they look like they're from a child's colouring-in book, but they're animated in a wonderfully smooth way with a realistic physics engine as your character and various objects interact on strange alien planets.

The game obviously bears certain similarities to the PSP's Loco Roco, they both involve a tilting landscape with a jelly-like main character and deceptively simple graphics. Eidos Mobile possibly chose Sola Rola as a name to encourage this comparison, as Loco Roco has been one of the most acclaimed portable games of recent times. However, they're really two different games. Sola Rola isn't anywhere near as surreal or abstract as Loco Roco, and in fact Sola Rola's atmosphere is much closer to the classic Toejam & Earl games on the Sega Mega Drive.

Sola Rola is a great game, and it's on sale at a very low price too. Eidos Mobile's site priced it at just 7 euros for Finnish customers, which is absolutely great value. If you have a compatible phone, get Sola Rola!

Will Sola Rola for Java work on my phone?

Click here to see the official Sola Rola compatibility list. (Incidentally, they left the Nokia N93 off the list, but the N95 version worked fine on my N93, so the list is possibly incomplete.)

Where to get Sola Rola for Java

You can get Sola Rola directly from the publisher Eidos Mobile. Just click here to go to the official Sola Rola website, and then click on the "Buy It" link in the top left hand corner.
