FIFA08 for Next Gen N-Gage demo - Video & Thoughts

FIFA08 (for some reason called FIFA07 in the demo) is another installment of EA's football simulation series, due out at the launch of the Next Gen N-Gage platform in December.

The Next Gen N-Gage version looks very nice indeed, especially when you play it in horizontal mode, and as you can see in the video above the animations are well done too, with players visibly frustrated when they let a ball go over the line, and goals followed by the usual group hugs and raised arms.

However, it's difficult to judge the game from the demo, partly because the control system feels a bit too complicated for a phone (ten separate commands), but mainly because EA have rather meanly restricted the demo to 10 matches. There's just too little chance for people to get to know the game before the demo shuts itself down, 10 matches aren't necessarily enough for a beginner or casual gamer to get the hang of the controls. People aren't likely to buy the full version if they weren't given the chance to learn to play the demo properly.

I guess the background music we can hear in the clip is not the real in-game sound. The original N-Gage Fifa game had a great soundtrack - does the new version have this too?

Hi Neil,

Yes, the new version does have a nice soundtrack and higher quality sound than the original N-Gage version.

The reason I substituted another track is rather mundane, my video camera makes an annoying buzzing noise when using its microphone (due to the tape rolling I assume) and the audio input jack seems to be broken.

I should add that I normally capture video directly from phones using models with TV outputs, but the N81 doesn't have TV Out so I had to actually film it in real life.

Sorry, another thing I forgot to mention, the actual matches are entirely made up of context-sensitive crowd noise, there's no music during the games.

Kor, this is the demo that Nokia offers in its "Discover N-Gage" application. They're all meant to be previews of upcoming games.

It's definitely a demo because most of the options are visible but greyed-out.

The name difference (demo=FIFA07, full game=FIFA08) is probably because Next Gen N-Gage was originally scheduled to be launched at the end of 2006, which is when the demo may have been written. The launch has been delayed until the end of 2007 so the name had to change even if the game stayed the same.

kOr, believe me, the game in the video is the demo for the Next Gen N-Gage version. It's even limited to 10 matches and has options greyed out.

You can see FIFA08 briefly in the Next Gen trailer at 00:30, it's absolutely identical to the demo:

Of course as this is EA and FIFA we're talking about, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they just put virtually the same game out twice in a year.

Where did you buy your FIFA07?
